What to know about Malta

Official rules in plain language. Every card shows the source and the date we last checked it.

  • A course under 90 days may need no visa

A visa-exempt national (it depends on your passport) can attend an English course shorter than 90 days without any visa or permit, with the course booking confirmation and a school letter.

  • Over 90 days needs a long-stay visa (Type D)

For courses exceeding 90 days, all third-country students — including visa-exempt nationals — are issued a National Long-Stay Visa (Type D).

  • Work only with a licence, up to 20 hours a week

Third-country students on English courses longer than 90 days with a Type D visa may work only with an Employment Licence (Jobsplus), for at most 20 hours a week — and only after the first 12 weeks of study, according to Jobsplus.

  • Health insurance with at least €100,000 of cover

Non-EU students applying for a study residence permit must show health insurance with at least €100,000 of cover, valid for the whole stay. ESL school students are not among the exceptions.

Immigration rules change and depend on your passport, your course and your school. Treat this as a starting point and always confirm on the official website before you decide.

Questions

Questions about Malta

Which languages are spoken in Malta?

Maltese is the national language, and Maltese and English are both official languages.

Do I need a visa for an English course in Malta?

It depends on your passport and the course length. If you are visa-exempt, courses under 90 days need no visa; above 90 days, the Type D visa is required of all non-EU students. Confirm your case on the official Identità site.

Does Departi replace checking the official immigration website?

No. Departi organises your preparation and shows the rules with the official source and the date of the last check, but immigration rules change. The final word always belongs to the government website.

Is Departi free?

The essentials are free: you learn English in the Journey, practise conversation within the daily quota, and get destination guides, the checklist and community — no credit card, no subscription. There are daily limits (the Journey's lives) and premium features unlocked by the Ticket. But you never have to pay to genuinely prepare.

What is the Ticket?

It's a one-time purchase that unlocks every premium feature for 12 months — no subscription. You can pay by PIX or by card, both R$296.99, in a single payment. The essentials stay free forever; the Ticket is for when you want to accelerate and use everything without limits.

What does the Ticket unlock?

The Ticket unlocks the premium features: unlimited Simulation conversations, the full lesson library, detailed speaking analysis, generating and adjusting your CV, the cover letter, the full placement test and the full hub. The Journey lessons and the daily conversation quota are always free.
